Node.js Developer Salary Trends in the Netherlands

6 December 2022, by Josh Nel

29% of developers in the Netherlands report working with Node.js, which makes it the second most-used framework in the Netherlands behind React. In this article, we’ll look at what Node.js developers can expect to earn on average in the Netherlands across their careers.

Average junior and mid-level Node.js developer salary

Node.js developers with at least two years of experience can expect to earn an average of €44 038 per year. That’s 7.3%, or €2 982, more than a JavaScript developer in the same bracket, and 8.3%, or €3 365 more, than one working with React.

That margin grows once developers pass the four-year experience mark, with the average salary increasing by an incredible 36.7% to €60 203. This increase puts intermediate Node.js developers 17.8%, or €9 103, ahead of their JavaScript counterparts and 11%, or €5 953, above React developers with similar experience.

What accounts for this enormous jump in salary? In the early part of their careers, developers tend to be more mobile, more frequently. This allows them to negotiate more significant raises than they might receive working at the same company.

Average Node.js Developer Salaries by Experience

Average Salary by Years Experience, showing 25th and 75th percentiles
Years of Experience 25th Percentile Average 75th Percentile
2-4 €35,825 €44,038 €51,150
4-6 €45,300 €60,203 €74,000
6-10 €52,722 €67,472 €80,221

Senior Node.js developers – those with at least six years of experience earn an average €67 472, a 12.1% increase from the intermediate level. However, that’s still an impressive 15.2%, or €8 901, ahead of senior JavaScript developers but only 7.7%, or €4 811, ahead of their React counterparts, who experience a notable increase when they become more experienced.

Why does salary growth slow for experienced Node.js developers? As noted earlier, developers in this career stage typically move companies less often, meaning fewer opportunities for fresh negotiations and more inflation-related annual pay hikes. Companies are also less inclined to offer large increases for developers whose salaries are already high.

Keep in mind

The data in this article is taken from StackOverflow’s 2022 Developer Survey’s open data. In this article, ‘salary’ refers to the gross annual salary (before tax) provided by 200 survey respondents from the Netherlands who identified as Node.js developers.

We only included salary insights for experience levels with enough data points to ensure that the amounts represent Node.js developers in the country. In this article, we excluded salaries for developers with fewer than two and more than ten years of experience.

We also ran an outlier analysis to identify data points skewing the distribution of salaries. These points were removed from the final dataset to ensure that the amounts represent Node.js developers in the Netherlands. We’ve also included the 25th and 75th percentiles to give you further information about the distribution of salary data.

Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. Many respondents may earn significantly more or significantly less than these averages. However, we hope to show underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.

These averages should not be used to estimate what your actual salary will or should be. Salaries depend on the company size, industry, individual, perks and nature of the work. These factors all influence the salary a company will offer to a prospective hire. In addition, most developers are “fluent” in several languages and work across multiple roles, affecting the final figures.

It’s also important to remember that every individual’s context is different. Salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.
